Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺積. 黃連 一兩三錢, 厚朴 八錢, 川烏ㆍ桔梗ㆍ白豆蔲ㆍ陳皮ㆍ三稜ㆍ天門冬ㆍ人參 各二錢, 乾薑ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ川椒ㆍ紫菀 各一錢半, 靑皮ㆍ巴豆霜 各五分. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大. 薑湯呑下, 服如上法. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats lung accumulation. Coptis 1 nyang 3 don; magnolia bark 8 don; aconite, platycodon, round cardamom, tangerine peel, sparganium, asparagus and ginseng 2 don each; dry ginger, white poria, zanthoxylum and aster 1.5 don each; green tangerine peel and croton frost 5 pun each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take down with ginger decoction, dosing as above. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Jeokchwi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Asparagus, aster and platycodon are the lung-specific additions and none of them touches the mass — they moisten, downbear and open the throat. That is the design principle of all five of these pills: a shared attacking core with a set of organ-appropriate medicinals laid over it, chosen for where the accumulation sits rather than for what it is made of.
