能生髮. 蔓荊子ㆍ沒石子ㆍ躑躅花ㆍ訶子皮ㆍ白芷ㆍ沈香ㆍ附子ㆍ防風ㆍ覆盆子ㆍ生地黃ㆍ零陵香ㆍ芒硝ㆍ旱蓮草ㆍ丁香各一錢半, 卷柏三錢. 右剉, 袋盛, 浸淸油八兩中, 封過七日, 取擦頭上, 日三. 《類聚》

Translation

Able to generate hair. Vitex fruit, Aleppo gall, rhododendron flower, chebula rind, angelica dahurica, agarwood, aconite, siler, rubus, raw rehmannia, loosestrife herb, mirabilite, eclipta, and clove 1.5 don each; selaginella 3 don. Cut the above, put in a bag, steep in 8 nyang of clear oil, seal for seven days, then take it and rub on the head three times daily. — Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two agents make this unusable as written. Rhododendron flower contains grayanotoxins, which are cardiotoxic and absorbed through skin, and aconite is discussed above; both are in an oil vehicle that promotes absorption. Recorded as documented. What remains interesting is the formulation logic — fourteen medicinals at an identical small dose with one at double, which is the structure of a perfumed dressing rather than a targeted prescription, and the agarwood, clove and loosestrife suggest the preparation was meant to be pleasant to wear as much as therapeutic. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
