Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治髭髮脫落, 能令再生. 附子ㆍ蔓荊子ㆍ柏子仁各五錢. 右爲末, 烏雞脂和勻擣乾, 置瓦合內, 封固百日, 取出. 塗落處, 三五日卽生新髮. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats fallen moustache and hair, able to make them grow again. Aconite, vitex fruit, and arborvitae seed 5 don each. Powder, mix evenly with black-boned chicken fat and pound until dry, place in an earthenware box and seal for a hundred days, then take it out. Apply to the places where hair has fallen, and in three to five days new hair grows. — Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Aconite applied to the scalp is the problem here. Aconitine is absorbed through skin, and scalp with active hair loss is often inflamed or excoriated, which raises absorption further; there is no safe topical dose and the preparation should not be made. Vitex fruit and arborvitae seed on a fat base would remain a reasonable emollient without it. The hundred-day sealed maturation is worth noting as a period method for letting a fat-based salve stabilize before use. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
