Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

能生鬚髮. 川椒ㆍ白芷ㆍ川芎各一兩, 蔓荊子ㆍ零陵香ㆍ附子各五錢. 右麄末, 入絹袋, 浸香油一斤中, 過二十一日, 取油擦頭上, 卽生新髮. 《類聚》

Translation

Able to generate beard and hair. Sichuan pepper, angelica dahurica, and cnidium 1 nyang each; vitex fruit, loosestrife herb, and aconite 5 don each. Coarsely powder, put into a silk bag, and steep in 1 geun of sesame oil. After twenty-one days take the oil and rub it on the head, and new hair grows. — Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A three-week cold oil infusion, which is the same method used for herbal scalp oils today. Without the aconite the remaining five make a sound formulation — Sichuan pepper and cnidium for local circulation, angelica dahurica and loosestrife as aromatics that carry through the oil, vitex for the head. Aconite in an oil base is particularly unwise, since lipid vehicles enhance transdermal absorption of aconitine; omit it. The Yuchwi is the Uibang Yuchwi (醫方類聚), the great Korean medical compendium of 1445 that preceded the Donguibogam by a century and a half. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
