Translation

Expels rheum and disperses phlegm, guides the qi downward and clears the diaphragm. Black morning glory seed, first-milled powder only, 3 nyang; bitter orange (bran-fried), pinellia (processed) and red tangerine peel 1 nyang each. Powder them, make pills with wheat paste the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty at a dose down with ginger decoction. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

取頭末 — take only the first milling — appears in three formulas in this section and is worth understanding. Morning glory seed is milled and only the fraction that passes first is used; the coarse residue is discarded. That first fraction is the most active part, so the instruction concentrates the purgative rather than economizing. Three nyang of it against one nyang each of the other three makes this a downward-driving formula with a phlegm formula attached. **Morning glory seed is a drastic purgative and is contraindicated in pregnancy and in depleted patients.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
