Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

化痰涎, 除濕熱, 利胸膈, 和脾胃. 黑牽牛子(頭末) 二兩三錢, 滑石二兩, 大黃一兩二錢, 木香ㆍ黃芩ㆍ靑礞石ㆍ枳殼ㆍ檳榔ㆍ靑皮ㆍ陳皮各五錢, 沈香二錢. 右爲末, 水丸梧子大, 薑湯, 或茶淸下五十丸. 《御藥》一方, 又名沈香和中丸, 治濕熱痰盛, 胸膈煩滿.

Translation

Transforms phlegm-drool, removes damp heat, frees the chest and diaphragm and harmonizes the spleen and stomach. Black morning glory seed, first milling, 2 nyang 3 don; talcum 2 nyang; rhubarb 1 nyang 2 don; costus, scutellaria, chlorite schist, bitter orange, areca, green tangerine peel and tangerine peel 5 don each; aloeswood 2 don. Powder them, make water pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty down with ginger decoction or clear tea. One version is also called Chimhyang Hwajung-hwan and treats damp-heat phlegm in abundance with the chest and diaphragm vexed and full. — Eoyagwonbang 御藥 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Roll the Phlegm Pill with the doses cut and a qi-moving layer added. The rhubarb drops from 8 nyang to just over 1, morning glory seed and talcum come in to drain damp downward through the urine as well as the stool, and costus, areca and the two peels move the qi that Roll the Phlegm Pill leaves alone. The result is milder and better suited to a patient whose complaint is fullness rather than derangement. **Contains a drastic purgative and rhubarb; not for use in pregnancy or in depleted patients.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
