Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

通治痰飮諸病. 黑牽牛子(取頭末) 三兩, 皂角(酥灸) 一兩六錢, 白礬(生) 一兩. 右爲末, 水丸梧子大, 酒下三五十丸. 《瑞竹》

Translation

Generally treats the various diseases of phlegm-rheum. Black morning glory seed, first-milled powder only, 3 nyang; gleditsia pod (butter-roasted) 1 nyang 6 don; alum, raw, 1 nyang. Powder them, make water pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take thirty to fifty down with wine. — Seojukdangbang 瑞竹 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Subdue Phlegm Pill stripped to its three attacking medicinals, with the alum used raw rather than calcined — raw alum is more caustic and more emetic. Taken down with wine, which carries the action outward and upward. Between this and the pill before it, the difference is that one keeps a phlegm-transforming layer and this one does not. **Contains a drastic purgative and raw alum; not for use in pregnancy or in depleted patients.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
