Ginseng Overcome Toxin Powder

Insampaedok-san

한글 인삼패독산  ·  Pinyin Ren Shen Bai Du San

人參敗毒散

Mint is given as 少許, a small quantity, and the ginger by the slice, so grams are 0 for both. Both named variants are registered separately: 人參羌活散 as insam-ganghwal-san, and 荊防敗毒散 as hyeongbangpaedok-san-on from the Epidemic chapter's leaf, which prints its full composition — this formula with 荊芥穗 and 防風 added.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Ten drugs at one dose each, and the ginseng is the one that gives the formula its name and its character: the surface-opening drugs are all paired — notopterygium with pubescent angelica, bupleurum with peucedanum, bitter orange with platycodon — and the ginseng sits underneath so that opening the surface does not empty the patient. That makes it usable in the frail and the elderly, where a plain ephedra formula would not be. The two variants in the text are the standard ones, and Hyeongbang-paedok-san is now the better known of the three. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
