Ginseng and Perilla Drink

Samso-eum

한글 삼소음  ·  Pinyin Shen Su Yin

參蘇飮

The Bogam prints 參蘇飮, and that is the name printed here. The herb dictionary keeps 人蔘 as the headword for ginseng, but the formula names follow the base text, which writes 參 throughout.

Translation

Treats contraction and damage by wind-cold with headache, fever and cough, and also an internal cause in the seven affects with copious phlegm, chest fullness and tidal fever. Ginseng, perilla leaf, peucedanum, pinellia, pueraria and red poria, 1 don each; tangerine peel, platycodon, bitter orange and licorice, 7 fun 5 ri each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes and decoct in water. — Igan 易簡 (Donguibogam · Han, upper)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The gentle answer when ephedra-class diaphoresis would flatten the patient — perilla leaf opens the exterior softly while ginseng holds the centre. The second indication is the one that gets overlooked: an internal cause in the seven affects, meaning the cold that follows a period of worry or grief, with phlegm and a tight chest. Half the formula is qi-regulating rather than surface-releasing, which is why it suits that picture. The default cold formula for the deficient and the elderly, and the base of several of the relapse formulas later in this chapter. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
