Translation

Treats contraction and damage by wind-cold with headache, body ache, reversal cold of the four limbs, pain arising in the chest and abdomen, vomiting and diarrhoea; or internal damage from raw and cold food together with external contraction of wind-cold — it governs all of these. Atractylodes lancea, 2 don; ephedra and tangerine peel, 1 don each; magnolia bark, platycodon, bitter orange, tangkuei, dried ginger, white peony and poria, 8 fun each; angelica dahurica, chuanxiong, pinellia and cinnamon bark, 7 fun each; licorice, 6 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and three stalks of scallion white, and decoct in water. — Immun 入門 ○ One method sets aside the angelica dahurica and cinnamon bark, dry-fries the remaining materials over a slow fire until the colour changes, spreads them to cool and then adds the cinnamon and angelica; this is called Sukryo-ojeok-san 熟料五積散, the cooked-material form. The unfried form is called Saengryo-ojeok-san 生料五積散, the raw-material form. — Haejang 海藏 (Donguibogam · Han, upper)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Fifteen drugs and five accumulations — qi, blood, phlegm, food and cold — each with its own contingent in the formula, which is why it covers a range no tighter prescription could. The indication is the real life of it: a patient who ate something cold and then got chilled, with aching, vomiting and loose stool all at once. The cooked and raw forms in the Haejang note are a genuine pharmaceutical distinction: dry-frying everything but the two aromatics mellows the formula for a weaker patient, and the aromatics go in afterwards so their volatile oils survive. One half of 交加散. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
