Translation

Grows the hair; most suitable where hair has fallen. Fresh ginger (baked dry) and ginseng, 1 nyang each. Powder finely, slice fresh ginger and dip the slices in the powder, and rub the places where hair has fallen, twice daily. — Seojuk 瑞竹 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two herbs and a method that is still in use — ginger rubbed on bald patches remains a common domestic remedy in Korea, and small trials of ginger constituents for alopecia areata have been run, with mixed results. The mechanism the classical text implies is local: warmth and pungency draw Blood to the root. Note the neat device of using a ginger slice as the applicator so the fresh juice and the dried powder are delivered together. Ginger can irritate broken or inflamed scalp; test a small area first. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
