Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

善烏鬚髮. 熟地黃三兩, 生地黃一兩半(同酒浸擣膏), 當歸二兩, 白芍藥一兩半(同酒炒), 知母一兩, 黃柏二兩(同鹽酒浸炒), 側柏葉ㆍ槐子各一兩(同炒), 連翹六錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 盛磁盒內, 放地上七日曬乾收之, 每五六十丸, 或溫酒, 或白湯下. 《入門》

Translation

Excellent for blackening the beard and hair. Prepared rehmannia 3 nyang and raw rehmannia 1.5 nyang (soaked together in wine and pounded to a paste); Korean angelica 2 nyang and white peony 1.5 nyang (wine-fried together); anemarrhena 1 nyang and phellodendron 2 nyang (soaked and fried together in salted wine); mugwort-leaf arborvitae and pagoda tree seed 1 nyang each (fried together); forsythia 6 don. Powder the above, form into honey pills the size of firmiana seeds, place in a porcelain box set on the ground for seven days to dry in the sun, and store. Take 50 or 60 with warm wine or plain hot water. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Samul-tang as the base with the anemarrhena-phellodendron pair added, which makes this the yin-vacuity-with-fire version of greying rather than simple depletion. The name refers to the trigrams Kan (water) and Li (fire), and the formula is built to raise the one and settle the other. Note the paired processing throughout — the two rehmannias soaked together, the peony fried with the angelica, the anemarrhena and phellodendron soaked as a couplet — which is a deliberate device for making the pairs act as single agents.
