Translation

A sagely medicine that supplements Heart and Kidney, arrests the complexion, and blackens the beard and hair. Fleeceflower root (steamed and sun-dried nine times) 4 nyang; ginseng, raw dried rehmannia (wine washed), prepared rehmannia, ophiopogon, asparagus, white poria, and fennel (dry-fried) 2 nyang each. Powder the above, form into honey pills the size of a bullet, and chew one thoroughly, sending it down with good wine or salt decoction. Or make firmiana-seed pills and take 50 to 70 on an empty stomach with wine. Avoid the three whites and refrain from bedroom affairs. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The cleanest and most usable formula in this section — eight herbs, all still in the modern dispensary, with nothing prohibited or toxic in it. The pairing of asparagus with ophiopogon covers Lung and Heart yin while fleeceflower root and the two rehmannias cover Liver and Kidney, and the single dry-fried fennel keeps the whole from being cloying. The three whites to be avoided are radish, scallion, and garlic, the standing dietary restriction alongside fleeceflower root in Korean practice; the same caution about prolonged use and liver function applies here as with Sinseonoun-dan. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
