Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractylodes, and Licorice Decoction

Yeonggyechulgam-tang

한글 영계출감탕  ·  Pinyin Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang

苓桂朮甘湯

Registered before the Phlegm-Rheum chapter was translated, from the Jingui Yaolue line rather than the Bogam text. Two readings were corrected on collation with Damum 6.4.3.1: the Bogam specifies red poria 赤茯苓 where the entry had white 白茯苓, and gives white atractylodes at 1.5 don, level with cinnamon twig, where the entry had 1 don. The Bogam's own annotation reads simply 仲景; the source field retains the more precise Jingui Yaolue attribution.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治痰飮. 赤茯苓 二錢, 桂枝ㆍ白朮 各一錢半, 甘草 一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《仲景》

Translation

Treats phlegm-rheum. Red poria 2 don; cinnamon twig and white atractylodes 1.5 don each; licorice 1 don. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Junggyeong 仲景 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The master formula for retained fluids, and the origin of the principle that rheum is transformed with warmth rather than drained with cold. The Damum chapter places it first among the eight rheums, against 痰飮 in the narrow sense — water running in the intestines with an audible splash in a patient who was once stout and is now thin. Red poria rather than white is the chapter's reading, which tilts the formula slightly toward freeing water downward rather than fortifying the spleen; the difference is small but it is the one the Bogam chose. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
