Translation

Treats the heat malaria with fire exuberant: the tongue curled, the lips parched, the nose as though blackened by smoke, and all six pulses surging and tight. Gypsum, 2 don 5 fun; bupleurum and coptis, 1 don 5 fun each; scutellaria, anemarrhena and phellodendron, 1 don each; gardenia, 8 fun; pinellia, 7 fun; non-glutinous rice, a hundred grains. Cut them up and make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

This is Baekho-tang crossed with Hwangryeonhaedok-tang and given a bupleurum handle — gypsum and rice from the first, the three yellows and gardenia from the second, bupleurum because the malaria still sits half in the exterior. The name is the formula's own argument: the dragon and the tiger, the cold-draining and the harmonising, pulled into one dose. The signs the Uigam lists are the ones that justify a cold formula this heavy: a curled tongue, parched lips, a nose looking soot-blackened, and surging tight pulses in all six positions. That last is the chapter's check against the opposite error, since the enduring malaria of the taxation section has a faint vacuous pulse and is ruined by exactly this prescription. **Contains pinellia (半夏), which is toxic raw and must be properly processed before use.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
