Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治傷寒陰證, 頭痛ㆍ身疼. 如不分表裏證, 以此導引經絡, 不致變動. 藿香一錢半, 紫蘇葉一錢, 白芷ㆍ大腹皮ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ厚朴ㆍ白朮ㆍ陳皮ㆍ半夏(製)ㆍ桔梗ㆍ甘草(灸) 各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 棗二枚, 水煎服. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats the yin pattern of cold damage with headache and body ache. Where the exterior and interior patterns cannot be distinguished, use this to guide and lead the channels, and no untoward change will follow. Agastache, 1 don 5 fun; perilla leaf, 1 don; angelica dahurica, areca husk, poria, magnolia bark, atractylodes, tangerine peel, processed pinellia, platycodon and roasted licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes and decoct in water. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Han, upper)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The sentence that explains why this formula is reached for so often: where the exterior and interior patterns cannot be told apart, use this and nothing untoward will follow. It is a safe formula by design — aromatic rather than forceful, with no ephedra, no aconite and no purgative — so a wrong guess costs little. Agastache and perilla leaf handle the surface, areca husk, magnolia bark and pinellia the turbid middle, atractylodes and poria the damp.
