Translation

Treats shaoyin disease where the patient wanted only to sleep and after two or three days becomes vexed in the heart and unable to lie down and sleep. Coptis, donkey-hide gelatin and peony, 2 don each; scutellaria, 1 don; hen's egg, one. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water down to half and strain; then add the gelatin and bring to the boil once more, then add the egg yolk, stir evenly and take, three times a day. — Junggyeong 仲景 ○ Also called Hwangryeon-gyeja-tang 黃連雞子湯. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han, upper)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The turn described in the indication is the whole diagnosis: a shaoyin patient who at first could not stay awake and now cannot sleep at all. That reversal means the yin has been consumed to the point where fire has nothing to hold it down, and the formula answers both halves — coptis and scutellaria to clear the fire, gelatin, peony and egg yolk to put the substance back. The order of preparation is the craft: strain first, then melt the gelatin, then stir in the yolk off the heat so it stays fluid. A yolk cooked solid is no longer a yin-enriching drug. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
