Divinely Conferred Great One Powder

Sinsutaeeul-san

한글 신수태을산  ·  Pinyin Shen Shou Tai Yi San

神授太乙散

The transcription prints 蒿本 for the fifteenth drug where 藁本, ligusticum, is intended, and the drug is entered here as gobon. A collation note reading 敎 : 教 is printed inside this leaf in the transcription, but the character 敎 belongs to the Hyangso-san leaf two items earlier and the note is misplaced.

Cut up, make one packet, add seven slices of ginger, seven jujubes and seven stalks of scallion, and decoct in water. — Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Nineteen drugs, sixteen at seven fun and three at three, and seven slices of ginger, seven jujubes and seven stalks of scallion at the end. The sevens are not pharmacology; they are the name showing through the prescription — the Great One, 太乙, and a formula divinely conferred, 神授. Underneath the numerology the composition is ordinary and sound: the Hyangso-san group for the stagnant qi, red peony and notopterygium and saposhnikovia for the surface, agastache and asarum and the two tangerine peels for the middle, chuanxiong and angelica dahurica for the head, and pueraria, cimicifuga and perilla leaf in small weight at the foot to lift. It carries the same blanket indication as the Seongsanja — given without asking what the pattern is — but with no aconite in it the blanket is a great deal safer. A broad first-day formula for an epidemic headache with chills and fever, of the kind a dispensary kept made up. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
