Translation

Treats epidemic pestilence in circulation, without asking whether the pattern is yin or yang, exterior or interior; take it continuously until recovery. It also treats wind-warmth and damp-warmth patterns. Katsumada galangal seed (roasted in ashes), polyporus, acorus, red poria, lesser galangal, pubescent angelica, red peony, aconite, ephedra, magnolia bark, ligusticum, bitter orange, bupleurum, alisma, asarum, saposhnikovia, white atractylodes, agastache, pinellia, evodia, atractylodes lancea and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. — Hwarin 活人 ○ At first light boil a cauldron of it, and if young and old each drink a cup the seasonal qi will not enter. — Hwarin 活人 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty-two drugs at five fun each — aconite, ephedra, lesser galangal, magnolia bark, acorus, evodia, asarum, pinellia, agastache and the rest — with the instruction that it may be given without asking whether the pattern is yin or yang, exterior or interior. A second line has a cauldron of it boiled at first light so that young and old may each drink a cup and keep the seasonal qi out: a communal preventive draught rather than a prescription for a patient. The formula is Su Shi's, and it is the most notorious prescription in the epidemic literature. He published it and it was taken up widely; later writers recorded that in warm epidemics it killed people, because a hot, aromatic, aconite-bearing formula given without discrimination to patients already burning is precisely the wrong medicine. The Bogam prints it with its blanket indication intact, and a reader should know what that indication cost. **Contains aconite, which is toxic, together with raw pinellia and asarum. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
